My New Quest

I am starting to practice freehand drawing random items, subjects, etc. I want to be able to draw my base framework for my portraits with only my hand and my eye, so i will start by practicing little by little, freehand drawing various things. So far, they are quite grotesque, but...i have only drawn for my first day for 20 minutes! Any tips on how to harness my beginning skill are welcome.
